Our programmes
At Red Door Recovery, our programmes are designed to do more than treat addiction — they restore dignity, rebuild connection, and create the foundations for long‑term, sustainable recovery. Grounded in our Therapeutic Whānau model, each programme we offer is intentionally small, deeply relational, and shaped by a blend of clinical expertise, lived experience, and holistic healing practices.
Set on our secluded rural property just north of Wellington, clients are welcomed into a safe, nurturing environment where they can slow down, breathe, and begin the work of transformation. Our approach is evidence‑based and trauma‑informed, delivered in a non‑clinical setting that feels more like a retreat than a facility. Here, tāngata whaiora are supported to explore the problem, understand the why, and step into their potential.
Every programme — residential, outpatient, long‑term, or transitional — includes education, therapy, counselling, wellness coaching, mindfulness, physical activity, and opportunities for joy and reconnection. And because recovery doesn’t end at graduation, every client receives two years of aftercare, ensuring they remain supported as they reintegrate into daily life. We are also open to customisable programmes to suit your needs, just reach out.
Whether someone needs intensive residential care, a structured outpatient pathway, or extended support to rebuild their future, Red Door provides a compassionate, culturally grounded, and proven pathway forward. This is a place where people are seen, uplifted, and welcomed into a whānau that walks with them every step of the way.
TotalCare - Residential Programme
4 weeks in residence with 2 years aftercare support
The TotalCare Residential Programme begins with four weeks in residence, followed by two full years of structured aftercare and ongoing support. This intensive first phase provides a safe, stable, and nurturing environment where clients can step away from the pressures of everyday life and focus fully on their healing.
The programme is comprehensive and fully inclusive. The cost covers transport for clients arriving from outside Wellington (air, rail, or bus), all meals, 24/7 supervision, and all external activities. Each person receives individual and group therapy, wellness coaching, and a full schedule of therapeutic inputs including goal setting, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, dialectical behaviour therapy, cognitive and behavioural tools, and relapse‑prevention planning. Clients also have access to our gym, guided meditation, peer support, and weekend activities designed to build confidence, connection, and joy.
Whānau involvement is an important part of the healing journey. When appropriate, we welcome family and supporters to take part in whānau hui — dedicated sessions that provide education, guidance, and a shared plan for how best to support their loved one during recovery and beyond.
Outpatient Programmes
4 weeks Monday to Friday - This is a full day programme 9am - 3.30pm.
Clients attending our outpatient programmes must have a safe, stable, and supportive living environment in the Wellington region. Because this pathway does not include residential care, maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle throughout the programme is essential for safety, progress, and long‑term recovery.
Our outpatient programmes offer the same high‑quality therapeutic support as our residential option, delivered in a structured full‑day format. Clients participate in education sessions, group therapy, individual counselling, meditation and mindfulness practice, nature hikes, and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). This combination of evidence‑based treatment, holistic wellness, and connection with peers provides a strong foundation for healing while allowing clients to remain engaged in their everyday lives.
Long Term Programmes / Transitional Housing
Clients who need additional time, stability, or support beyond the initial 28‑day programme can access our tailored long‑term pathways. These extended programmes are designed on a case‑by‑case basis to meet individual needs, clinical recommendations, and personal goals. For many, this may include moving into one of our transitional residences or an on‑site tiny home, providing a safe and structured environment to continue their healing.
Our long‑term programmes focus on real‑world reintegration while maintaining the safety and therapeutic support of Red Door. This may include help with goal setting, strengthening daily routines, maintaining safety plans, building life skills, and preparing for employment or study. Additional counselling and therapeutic support are provided as needed, ensuring each person has the right level of guidance as they move toward independence.
Transitional housing offers a gentle step between residential treatment and full community living — a place where clients can practise new skills, rebuild confidence, and stay connected to the Red Door whānau while shaping a stable, sustainable future.
Two Years of Aftercare - Our Commitment to You
Recovery doesn’t end when the programme finishes — and neither does our support. Every Red Door client receives two full years of structured aftercare, because we know that healing is a lifelong journey and that the transition back into everyday life can be one of the most vulnerable stages.
Our aftercare pathway is designed to keep clients connected, supported, and accountable as they rebuild their lives. Through regular check‑ins, therapeutic guidance, peer support, and access to our recovery community, clients continue to strengthen the tools, insight, and resilience gained during their time in residence or outpatient care.
We also recognise that addiction is a chronic, relapsing condition. If at any point during the two‑year aftercare period a client feels at risk of lapsing — or has already lapsed — they are welcomed back for a Recovery Reboot. This two‑week, half‑day relapse‑prevention programme is provided at no additional cost on an outpatient basis. Residential reboots are available at minimal cost to cover food and accommodation. If safe housing is needed, we can help arrange secure accommodation nearby, and transitional housing may be available when space allows.
Our aftercare is not an add‑on — it is a core part of our kaupapa. It reflects our belief that recovery is strengthened through connection, consistency, and whānau. When someone commits to reclaiming their life from alcohol and other drugs, we commit to walking with them for as long as they need us.
